Fire Kills 4 in Upstate New York

At least four people were killed when a fire gutted a house in upstate New York on Friday evening, officials said.

The fire was reported around 9:20 p.m. on Friday in the town of Elmira, Sgt. Russell Andrews of the Elmira Police Department said on Saturday. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and as of Saturday evening the identities of the victims had not been released. There were no other injuries reported and it was not clear whether anyone else was in the home at the time, Sergeant Andrews said.

“Four subjects were found in the residence by the fire department,” he added. “All four succumbed to their injuries and died.”

Some witnesses said there were children in the home, but officials could not say whether any children were among the victims.

“I looked out the door, seen fire coming out of the windows and the doorway, I called 911,” Glen Bolt, 72, told the Elmira Star-Gazette. “The next thing I know someone said there’s kids in there.”

“I ran across the street, and me and the neighbor there busted the windows out, hoping the kids would come through that window,” Mr. Bolt said. “But by that time the smoke had already got them.”
